An ancient settlement on the Tigris. Much of the old town was flooded by the Ilısu Dam and several monuments were moved to the new town, which overlooks the reservoir.
Old Mardin and Deyrulzafaran (about 60 km, 1 h)
Stone houses and madrasas on a hillside facing the Mesopotamian plain. Deyrulzafaran Monastery lies about 5 km east of Mardin and fits easily into the same day.
Dara ancient city (about 75 km, 1 h 10 min)
An Eastern Roman garrison town between Mardin and Nusaybin, known for its underground cisterns and rock-cut tombs.
